The supervisors also questioned the $7,500 line item for telephone services. Mr. Poling explained that, when squads are in the field, it is often necessary for the dispatcher to make long distance calls to hospitals to have specialists ready for the patient’s arrival, or to Charlottesville to request the Pegasus Med-Evac helicopter.

It’s difficult for people to be in the field, doing the job, then knocking on doors all the time. We still have maintenance costs, training.”

Frank Huff, chief of Flint Hill Co. 4 and a state-certified Cardiac Technician, requested the board to delete the $6,000 for the 911 system but to approve the rest of the request. “We’ve been a proud service, we’ve tried to be self-sufficient. We ask the volunteers to run calls at all hours; ask them to take three to four months to take courses for state-required rescue certification.”
He added that Flint Hill is going to replace its 1964 pumper, which cost $19,000, with a new piece which will cost $122,000. “And that’s not extravagant,” he said. The volunteers spent six months shopping to find the best piece of equipment for the least amount of money. “That has been the volunteer service’s tradition,” he said firmly.
The board agreed to delete the $6,000 appropriation for the 911 system and approved the remainder of the association’s request.
