The talents he is putting together as a volunteer are no accident. He has a master’s degree in journalism from Stanford University, obtained between stints with the Navy, including two wars. He had begun working for ABC News in San Francisco when he was called back for the Korean War. After that the Holschuhs figured the Navy might as well be a career since it repeatedly interrupted their lives anyway.

Howdy, now 63, with the bright blue gaze one might expect of an intelligence officer in the movies, enjoyed his career. But one of the best things about it, he recalls, is that he didn’t have to be separated from his family for long tours of duty. And, in 30 years in the Navy, “I spent only 11 months on a ship.” That was in the Pacific in World War II.

The only separation his family endured was his one year in Saigon during the Vietnam years. He spent three years in Trinidad, time in the British West Indies and in Hawaii, and a tour in Frankfort, Germany, was followed by his final tour at the Pentagon.

In the Navy, he used his experience writing radio scripts in his duties, which were mostly digesting intelligence reports from around the world and presenting them concisely to admirals, often a roomful of admirals.

He was the briefing officer for the Chief Naval Officer in the Pentagon, and earlier had to keep up with the ships heading to Cuba during the Cuban missile crisis - information Secretary McNamara had to have kept up to the minute. He found Mr. McNamara “very meticulous, capable and demanding” and was proud to come up to his standards.

While he wasn’t working for a news organization, “it was a good way to keep up” with what Was happening internationally. It was sometimes a strain to know the real state of current crisis, yet Mr. Holschuh
