This set in motion an extensive state study of the history and buildings of Slate Mills in the potential Slate Mills Historic Dictrict. The highway department decided tP look at a. more northern location for the replacement bridge. VDOT is now planning to build the bridge about 16 feet north and upstream from the current location.
However, this new location will require taking land from Philip Milton on the northeast comer of the intersection with Route 604, and Mr. Milton also owns an old house, a nearby building which is probably a former summer kitchen and slave quarters, and an old cemetery of the Miller family.
