The study suggests that a western
bypass would divert more truck traffic from Interstate 81 than from the Capital Beltway. The bypass would provide an alternative to trucks that travel 1-81 on their way from Richmond to Chicago and other midwestem cities.
Eastern routes of a bypass around Washigton provide more relief to congestion on Interstate 95 and on the beltway, according to the study.
“When viewed in an interstate context within the Eastern Seaboard, am eastern bypass and a western bypass would become vital links in the system of Interstate and National Defense Highways,” the report states.
Farm land would be affected, and there is a potential for adverse impact on the environment, but the study concludes those impacts can be successfully mitigated.
