thing,” he said. “We own the four comers the bridge sits on. The other way would have come into our yard 150 feet. It would be 12 feet above the present elevation. The 90 feet of fill would have come almost to the front door. I’d be curious to know how much VDOT has got in this project already. I’ve renovated my house while they’ve been studying it. This route will be more straightforward with not as much fill.”

“The reason the route was shifted was to lessen the impact on the historical area,” Resident Engineer Robert Moore said. “The whole area has been declared historical. The Department of Natural Resources felt it would have less impact on the area if it were on the north side. We’re required to give due consideration to their findings.”

Mr. Moore said the report on the public hearing will be sent to the Transportation Commission, which has the final say on all proposed VDOT projects, commissioners. If the project is approved to go ahead, construction should start in the spring or summer of 1991.
