I made it — I was over and traveling down. That’s what this race is about — personal satisfaction —conquest.
I think Dennis Wingfield hit it right on the nose when he described the race as the runner's attempt to make some kind of conquest — to find some loophole in the course and be able to master it. It’s impossible. It’s just a hard mountain to climb — and gets harder each year.
The same runner from the beginning of the race was there beside me — admitting to the trail’s agony and asking why we had put our bodies through this torture. Why?
For that victory over a mountain — I can make this torture anologous to climbing Mount Everest.
Through it all, I wondered where Nina Stamer was? Maybe — just maybe — she was way back behind me — maybe. . .
God, I just might have to run this race one more time in order to beat her. No, I was never running this course again. My feet pounded on toward Washington. I was almost there.
