one to use the technology. A contractor in Schenectedy, New York used the technology for a YWCA building there, Dr. Barrett said.

“It’s an unusual design, but nothing radical,” he said. “Instead of two sheets of glass it has tubes of glass side by side.” The tubes have vacuums inside and are attached to each other with a bead of silicone. “Instead of a metal plate behind, they have ft matrix of blackened fiberglass. It’s extremely light, and as air goes through it picks up more heat because the fiberglass has more surface.”

Dr. Barrett said that the collector could be mounted vertically on a south facing wall, but the trustees told him that the front of the Greek Revival building is the surface which faces most directly south,
