Town residents care
There were several interesting conclusions drawn from the results of the Town of Washington’s election, held Tuesday, May 1, but none more important than the most obvidus: that the 94 percent turnout indicates the town’s residents care deeply about Washington and the issues which face it.
Their concern over the proposed expansion of The Inn at Little Washington was evidenced by the number of residents who attended the recent public hearings.
But we think that the turnout for the election — and the results — indicate that the residents viewed the election not as a one-issue referendum on the Inn’s expansion, but rather as an opportunity to guide the development of them town over the next few years.
We think that the next council will be a good one. There is representation of a broad spectrum of town residents, as well as council members with experience on its Planning Commission, on which they gained familiarity with the town’s ordinances and their application.
The coming years will be busy ones for Washington’s council. Though the Inn’s applications are the most important issues on the table now, right behind them will come a revision of the Comprehensive Plan, the overhaul of the water sy stem and continuing work on the town’s other ordinances.
We wish the new council well, and look forward to working with its members. And, we urge the town’s residents to continue to voice their opinions — both to their councilmen and afthe public hearings.
