Fed by piping running from the drains in each of his bams, the waste flushed from the hog pens runs into the pool where it is held.
When the pool fills, about every six months, the waste will be tested for nutrient levels, pumped out and spread on fields as fertilizer.
Although the same nutrients are contained in the waste, Mr. Love explained, when it is spread on a field in a controlled application, under controlled conditions, little if any will reach the streams. The nutrients will stay on the fields, where they belong.
Extension Agent Tommy Williams praised Mr. Massie and Mr. Sutphin for their interest in the program. “They took the initiative to apply, and to put up their share of the money. They are taking responsibility for improving the environment for themselves and their neighbors.”
