A substantial number of ballots had less than five choices marked for the council seats, said the mayor, who observed the tally inside the Washington Fire Hall. “That’s testimony to people voting only for those they really felt strongly about.”
There were no “coattails,” he added, referring to an election phenomenon when less well-known candidates are swept into office on the strength of another candidate with whom they become identified.
Mrs. Moffett said “I appreciate the confidence of everybody who voted for me . . . I’m just glad its over.”
Mr. Bailey also thanked his supporters, adding “the turnout is a real compliment to the community. I hope to do a job that they will be proud of — as well as myself ... I think it will be a very fair and openminded council.”
