And, she added, the strips often make steep slope fields easier to farm since the rows follow the topographic contours and running equipment in the field becomes easier.
The areas around watercourses, she said, are left to grow long in grasses to provide another filter for nutrients and soil before they reach the nearby creeks.
Mr. Sutphin used to wash out his hog bams and let the water, mixed with waste, run down through the barnyard. Eventually, the water and most of the waste reached a creek below his farm. From there the waste water, rich in phosphorus and nitrogen, flowed toward the Bay.
Those two nutrients, found in abundance in animal Wastes, “are principle contributors to the decline of the Bay,” according to SWCD technician Kenner Love.
