Even if analysis were to indicate contamination, with tens of thoqsands of silent people drinking annually, this is fairly indicative of a non-problem. It is obvious that these two government agencies are more concerned with far-fetched legal liabilities than with the desires of the populace which they serve There are surely more effective uses of the Commonwealth’s tax dollars than the removal of this spring which so many of us value.
The spring is currently posted (after a two year hiatus) with a scary sign warning the drinker that these waters are contaminated This' should be sufficient to cover any lia-i bilities should anyone deem the risk worth taking and drink these waters. It should be possible to devise a sign which can withstand the work of vandals who wish to harm it, and to ask the State Police to inform! VDOT if it is defaced or removed
Further, a little public education," perhaps in the form of a news re-! lease to the local papers and a clause' on the sign itself, regarding the purpose of the sign, and the fact that its alternative is a shutdown of the spring, should deter vandalism, at least by the righteous.
