The remaining 155 acres will be sprayed with Gypchek, a recently discovered viral insecticide which is specific to gypsy moths. It is, however, extremely expensive, supplies are limited and it has a short useful life once sprayed.

Mr. McAninch said that spraying will begin shortly after daybreak, the most effective time to spray. Crews will mark the comers of the designated spray blocks with helium balloons before dawn that morning.

The spraying will be done with a fixed wing aircraft called a Thrush Commander, which will be flying between 50 and 100 feet above the trees.
