But, neither rain nor shine can stop some runners. For the Fairbrothers it was a family affair. Young Michael Fairbrother of Woodville was the youngest participant — only four-years-old — and completed the course in 1 hour and 56 minutes. His sister, Meghan, 8, finished just ahead of him, with a time of one hour and 49 minutes. Their mother, Cheryl, walked the course.
“He was so excited to have finished,” Ms. Lillard said of Michael, adding the youngster did the course all on his own.
Familiar Rappahannock contestant Mark Jenkins of Flint Hill finished just over his desired time of 45 minutes with a final finish of 46:52:83. Jenkins has participated since age eight and this year leaves the category of 12 and under with a first place trophy.
Rappahannock High School distance standout Matt Eidson was just ahead of Jenkins with a time of 41:59 — placing first in the 13 to 18 age category.
While trophies in the categories for ages 19 and older often went to runners from other areas, the younger categories winners were Rappahannock schoolchildren.
