Rappahannock students are as likely as students nationwide to use alcohol and illegal drugs.
At Tuesday’s School Board meeting the school administration released the results of a survey of students in 6th through 12th grades that was given to Rappahannock students this past Dec. 17, comparing the results with a national survey given Aug. 29.
Rappahannock seniors have used drugs more than the national sample for 10 of the 11 categories surveyed. 53.7 percent of Rappahannock high school seniors have used cigarettes compared to 38.1 nationally; 64.8 percent have used beer compared to 64.3 percent nationally; 61.1 percent have used liquor compared to 58.5 percent nationally; 28.3 percent have used marijuana compared to 21.7 percent nationally; and 9.3 percent have used cocaine compared to 4.4 percent nationally.
For uppers the figures are 13 percent and 8.6 percent, and for downers they are 9.3 percent and 4.9 percent. Also, 9.3 percent have used
