Sen. Charles Waddell, D-Loudoun/Fairfax, who opposed the bill in committee, claimed the bill sends a different message.
“The message of this bill is clear: in Virginia, nothing is historic unless its owner wants it to be,” Sen. Waddell told the committee.
It is still unclear what the House intends to do with the bill. Though a similar bill was introduced in the House, it was killed in committee while patrons on the Senate side debated amendments.
The House action was not a vote against the bill, but merely a move to allow the Senators to work out the details, according to Del. William Robinson Jr., who sits on the House committee charged with reviewing the measure.
Though opponents of the bill lost on the Senate side, they claim they will fight harder on the House side.
