The Virginia Agricultural Best Management Practices (BMP) Cost Share Program is underway for 1992, but tffyh several changes, according to Kenneth Love, conservation specialist of the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District.
In past years, the cost share program has had a periodic sign-up for farmers interested in receiving financial assistance for installing soil and water conservation measures. For 1992 the sign-up is continuous, lasting the duration of the program.
The Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District staff will also actively seek participants for this year’s cost share program. The district is working with state conservation officials to determine land areas with the greatest potential for agricultural runoff pollution—a major threat to Virginia’s waterways.
Nutrients from ’animal waste, commercial fertilizers and projected erosion on pasture and cropland are factors used to determine potential for agricultural pollution. Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation/Division of Soil and Water Conservation staff input this data to a computerized database as the basis for hydrologic unit planning, or HUP.
