Rappahannock Deputy Connie Compton’s cruiser sustained about $2,000 in damage to the front end when she wrecked it responding to a high-speed chase at about 1:37 a.m. Feb. 4 on Route 604, according to Sheriff Woodward.
Although Deputy Compton never made it to the pursuit, Robert Lewis Wynkoop Jr. of Culpeper went from U.S. 522 to Route 707 in Rappahannock, to Route 644 in Culpeper, did a U-tum, headed back into Rappahannock onto Route 707 again, to Route 231 by Old Rag Mountain, onto Route 601, did a circle back to Route 707, onto Route 231 again and up 681, where he ran into a dead-end, according to Sheriff Woodward.
The incident began when Wynkoop allegedly drove off from a gas station in Culpeper County without paying, according to Sheriff Woodward.
« • Mary Miller Quaintance, 85, of Sperryville, was charged with reckless driving by Trooper G.T. Little after an accident on Route 231, onetenth of a mile south of Route 608, at 5:45 p.m. Feb. 7, according to Sgt. D.S. Adams of the State Police.
Mrs. Quaintance was operating a 1989 Chevy four-door north on Route 231, apparently in the southbound lane, when she hit a 1969 Dodge operated by 45-year-old Andrew Junior Weakley of Sperryville, said Sgt. Adams.
The Dodge had been traveling southbound on Route 231.
Both drivers and a passenger in Mrs. Quaintance’s vehicle, Julie Q. Wood, 86, were injured.
The Dodge sustained about $800 in damages, the Chevy about $3,000.
