The survey also shows that fewer Rappahannock students than students nationally report that their parents, teachers and friends talk with them about the harmful effects of drugs. It also shows that fewer of them than the national sample “like the way” they look.
Guidance counselor Joyce GoodEwing reported that a committee working on the problem is arranging parenting classes. The goal is to reduce the use of drugs 20 percent in two years.
'Hie School Board also heard a request from the junior class to hold the Junior-Senior Prom at Fauquier Springs Country Club. Class president Lori Paratore said the juniors did not want to hold the prom in the elementary school gymnasium. She said there would have been less interest in going outside the county if the students could have used the high school gymnasium for the prom.
The board agreed to let School Superintendent David Gangel and Mrs. Massie make the decision on using Fauquier Springs. Dr. Gangel said he wanted to consult with high school principal John Toth and visit the facility himself.
^The board voted to hire an additional special education teacher on a part-time basis. The special education classes, especially for the learning disabled, are at or near the capacity allowed by state and federal guidelines and 10 more students are being evaluated for placement in such classes. Dr. Gangel pointed out that he would also have to locate a space for the additional class.
The board adopted a policy barring weapons from school property and tabled until next month consideration of a policy to refuse admission to a student who has been expelled or suspended from another school until the student is eligible to re-enter the original school.
The board heard a presentation by gifted 7th grade students who had worked on a project to relocate humans if the earth becomes uninhabitable. One group designed a colony for another planet. The other planned for settlement on the sea floor.
