Evelyn Dellinger has brought i new talent to Rappahannocl County.
A newcomer to the Castletor area, Mrs. Dellinger and her husband moved to the county in 1989.
Among the moving boxes were scrapbooks filled with photos of Mrs. Dellinger’s weddings.
“I just love weddings,” she said with a smile.
Making the wedding perfect, Mrs. Dellinger creates the perfect cake complete with her own round table and lace cloth.
Besides making the cake and bringing the table for it to stand upon, she delivers the masterpiece, sets it up and stays to serve the guests.
It’s not a business, she says, but a hobby, a pleasure.
Mrs. Dellinger has been making cakes since her two grown children were just boys. It was not until 1974 that she really got serious.
As a Fairfax County resident, she took a cake decorating class offered through the county.
“It taught me how to do the frosting, make the flowers and decorate the cake,” she said with modesty, a tall woman with dark hair.
Not only does she create masterpiece wedding and anniversary cakes, her sugar-plum cottages and gingerbread houses are picturebook quality.
In 1977, her birthday cake for U.S. Rep. Claude Pepper, D-Fla., was featured in People Magazine—a cake able to feed 300 people with hundreds of yellow roses tumbling over its sides.
Since that time, Mrs. Dellinger says she has make cakes for everywhere, from the “Capitol to a bam.”
“I’ve never made, one” that was so beautiftil she could not give it away. “If it satisfies me, then it’s ready to be cut,” she said with a smile, opening page after page of elegant white wedding and anniversay cakes.
She remembers every wedding detail like they were her own.
Cakes with icing that looks like a glass crown—lace points—cakes with real flowers, cakes with silk flowers, cakes with motorcyles and cakes with icing that glistens like silk highlight each page.
Looking at the scrapbooks, it's hard to tell the real flowers from her carefully created frosting petals.
