Brown Hollow for the next six years. So it appeared that a compromise could be agreed to that would meet her wishes of leaving the farm intact and still meet the county’s concerns for safety.

They agreed to the compromise and she and VDOT signed an agreement with her donating all the right of way that was necessary for this improvement. The 6-7 other landowners adjacent to her property were not required to donate their (ROWVand the entire widening and broadening of the curve was accomplished on her property.

I feel that she was prepared to turn down the larger project even though she had let state officials proceed with working out an agreement. Her sincere love for her property, far outweighed the economic benefits of the farm improvement VODT promised if the donation was made. So, her only drive to let the project proceed was her concern for her neighbors.

I feel the donation of an open space easement that keeps over 300 acres of her land intact into perpetuity provides much more for her neighbors than the improvement could ever provide. With some widening within the existing right of way, as was proposed at the meeting, the existing roadway will be safe and adequate. If all the other roads are eventually widened and paved in Gid Brown Hollow, even then this short section through the heart of her farm will be a welcomed relief, to go slower and enjoy the scenic beauty that makes Rappahannock so special.
