Vi Vierling of Flint Hill has found her simple idea of a part-time job has turned into a full-time career.
Mrs. Vierling owns and operates Aunt Jane’s Sewing and Alterations in Flint Hill, located on the southern end of the old packing house next to Settle’s Garage on U.S. 522.
“I can’t remember when I was not making something,” she said, adding even as a child she made doll clothes.
As an adult, she began to sew out of “necessity, though I never thought this would be a business,” said Mrs. Vierling, a small blonde woman sitting in a neat shop amid sewing machines and utensils of various descriptions.
As a bookkeeper in Maryland, her talents, due to her finely tailored suits, were noticed. After several “favors” she closed the books and started sewing part-time while working in a fabric shop where she

The following students from Rappahannock County received first honors during the second quarter of the current school year at Wakefield School in Marshall: first graders Christina Luke, Ian Matthews, Adrianne Moore and Emily Yates; second graders Spencer Baumgardner and Maggie-Sinclair Ruisi; third grader Laura Yates; fourth grader Sarah Yates; sixth graders Robb DeBergh and Holly Wright; seventh graders Van DeBergh and Scott Updike and twelfth grader Alison Martin.
Several Rappahannock students were named to the second-honors list: third grader Katie. Updike, fourth grader Jamie Harris, seventh graders Mary Beth Williams and Katie Zindel and eleventh grader Stephanie Tomeden.
