Central came back in the second quarter, outscoring Rappahannock 23-9 and building a 12-point halftime lead against the visiting Panthers.
Central’s marquee player, 6-3 forward Jared Hoover, had been averaging 21 points per game, but Roy marked him man-to-man and held him to only 17 points. Roy led the Panthers in scoring with 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
“Central showed why they’re number one,” said Coach Gary Leake: six of their players were in double figures. Three Panters had at least 10: Roy, Henry (14 points), and Kevin Jolliffe (13). Michael Williams had eight. Williams continues to lead the team in scoring with 17.3 points per game, and in rebounding with an 11.5 average.
Against Central, “Their depth was a key, but even in the third quarter we cut their lead to four,” said Coach Leake.
Then, in the final quarter, Rappahannock was forced to foul, and Central’s players made 10 of 12 free throws to ice the contest.
The Central loss and a Tuesday night loss at Strasburg (details not available at press time) dropped the Panthers’ record to 4-15 overall, 3-11 in the Bull Run District.
This week Rappahannock has Parent’s Night against Manassas Park at home 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14. The final game of the season is at Stonewall Jackson-Mount Jackson, Feb. 18.
The district tournament will be held Feb. 24-28 at Warren County High in Front Royal. Central and Strasburg are expected to be the top two seeds, with Stonewall, Clarke and George Mason in the three,through-five slots.
