Trivia question: Which current Rappahannock high school basketball player is averaging 28.3 points and 10.6 rebounds per game this year, has scored more than 1,000 career points—and is still a junior?
Answer: Bobby Nelson of Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly.
Nelson, a varsity starter for Wakefield since he was a freshman, made the sports page of the Washington Post two weeks ago after scoring 51 points in a 86-59 win over Notre Dame Academy in Middleburg. Although there were several errors in the Post’s piece, it attracted a recruiter from national basketball powerhouse Georgetown University, who called Nelson’s coach Jim Harris for more information this week.
Coach Harris said the Wakefield CDS offense is designed around Nelson, who is the oldest player on a team filled with sophomores. And on defense Nelson becomes a center, where the 6foot-1 player has an amazing 66 blocked shots.
The 5-12 Wakefield CDS team is without a win in Delaney Conference play, but Nelson has provided plenty of highlights. In the Wendy’s Tournament at Randolph-Macon in December, a strong Bethlehem Baptist squad double-teamed him, but he still set a tournament scoring mark, getting 70 [mints in two games. In the Fredericksburg Tip-Off Tournament this season he had 71 [mints in three games—all on the same day.
Nelson is the Wakefield CDS team captain, and an exceptionally unselfish athlete, said the coach. In the Notre Dame contest he was 22-of-36‘from the field, had 22 rebounds and nine blocked shots, but in the fourth quarter Coach Harris had to pressure him
