Mike Ferris, who lost his bid last fall for Lieutenant Governor, said Sen. Warner “will be challenged” for the Republican nomination in 1996. He said he was considering taking on the challenge himself.
Sen. Warner said he intends to run for reelection in 1996 and welcomes challengers. He said he intends to enter the Republican primary. But the party does not have to hold a primary in 19%. It may instead select its nominee in a convention as the party did this year. In that case, Sen. Warner may have a very difficult time overcoming resentment of the role he played as Marshall Colemen’s principal sponsor.
Sen. Robb and Col. North each carried three precincts in Rappahannock County, with North easily winning Amissville, Scrabble and Chester Gap while Sen. Robb carried Flint Hill, Washington, and Sperryville. In Sperryville his margin was a slight six votes. The Scrabble precinct reported lour votes for former Gov. Douglas Wilder, who dropped out of the race after the ballots were printed.
Sen. Robb’s victory countered Republican gains elsewhere in the nation Tuesday night when the G.O.P. appeared headed for control of both houses of Congress.
