My hat’s off to Mr. Floyd Grigsby for his research on the. in-L habitants of Rock Mills.
During my life time, Rock Mills has been synonymous with Edward and Helen Pawley. In the 50’s and 60’s they ran the Cash and Totem store at the heart of Rock Mills— down by the river where the Thornton and Rush meet, where the foundation of the old stone mill stands crumbling under Edward’s ancient Sycamore that refuses to die. Ed and Helen gave a vitality to Rock Mills that is unprecedented. With them at the intersection of roadways 622 and 626 and the confluence of the two rivers, everyone in the vicinity passed through their living room. Even canoeists found a warm fireplace after a wet journey down the flooded Thornton.
Autumn leaves were not raked up there because they formed a “Persian Carpet” in his driveway. Every sunrise and sunset on Rock Mills was proof of the magnificence of our Almighty Creator. No human being was less than a true genius in the eyes of Edward and Helen. No one came near the old house by the river without feeling loved and hear- \
