Nine year-old Sam Wood has made an incredibly beautiful "Universe” quilt which is on display in the childrens’ room at the library.
The quilt looks like it was made by a long-time quilter; it is an amazing feat for one so young. The design is a nine-patch, and the quilt project helped Sam learn his multiplication tables as part of his home-schooling.
His mom, Diane, and Barbara Sherwood of Sperryville helped Sam get his quilt underway. Sam first drew the quilt design on graph paper, and Mrs. Sherwood calculated how much he would need of each fabric. The fabrics he chose are yellow, purple, blue solids and a “universe” fabric with gold planets and stars on a purple background. He may have been influenced by the video series “Cosmos” which he had been watching during the time of making his quilt.
Sam next had to mark out the square shapes on the fabric, using templates he made, before cutting out the shapes. His mother said he
