Canes grow for a season, produce a crop in the fall, and are left on the plant to help it survive the winter. They are then removed in early spring. The canes can be cut with a rotary mower and all cut material removed from the planting.
New canes will grow from the crowns to produce that fall’s harvest and the cutting procedure can be repeated the next spring. Although you miss the June harvest, the total yield will be higher in the fall than it is on plants producing two crops per year, and the maintenance will be reduced greatly.
