As Children

Cook

Did you know that nearly half of all children ages 9 to 15 in the U.S. do not have a daily meal with their families? According to experts, this " lack of family mealtimes can contribute to a decline in family relationships.

But it’s not too late, says home economist Kathy Belcher of the Diary and Food Nutrition Council of < the Southeast. "Giving kids a smart start in the kitchen—teaching them basic cooking skills early—can foster their enthusiasm for cooking and eating with their families.”

Belcher recommends that parents spend time with their children in the kitchen. Weekends may be the best option, with today’s two-career families and single-parent households, she notes.

“As a start, parents should teach . their children how to start clean and end clean - always wash their hands before preparing food, and clean up the kitchen when they’re done,” Belcher recommends.

Parents should also teach chil-" dren how to read a simple recipe,' measure properly, and how to use the stove and microwave safely, states Belcher.

An example of a simple item kids; can put together is English muffinpizza. Toast an English muffin, add tomato sauce and cheese, and heat. -
