A change since we were in Russia in 1990 that was noticeable are markets where consumer goods of a new order are available to those with money to buy. We ivisited a large, open and covered market in, Irkutsk that must occupy a city block that we were assured is open daily. Quantities of meat were being hacked up with large axes. There was no odor, indicating to me it was all fresh.All sorts of vegetables and fruit were on sale-oranges from Morocco, bananas from Ecuador and pineapples from who knows where. Honey and all kinds of dairy products were abundant. Three bananas were about one dollar. In contrast to the cornucopia of the market were the sick and dispirited-looking people we saw. There were beggars at the churches and many poorly dressed and disfigured individuals, even hungry looking. Our guide said health care is free, but I could only wonder what that meant. When we saw the poor housing in the villages and the poor people in the cities, it was hard to think that good times were coming soon for the average l person. Our accompanying Russian specialist lecturers didn’t believe so either.
