monthly trip. to Culpeper. These trips are a tremendous help to the seniors, because otherwise they would have to depend on family or friends to take them shopping. Very few have their own vehicles or even drive anymore.
Various programs are provided for the seniors once or twice a week. Once a month, nurses from the local health department take everyone’s blood pressure and do sugar tests for diabetes, at no charge. Last week a political candidate visited the group, and sometimes county residents will stop by just to visit, or maybe give a slide show of an exciting trip they took. Other programs have included crafts, basket-making, pottery, nutrition and health information, groups from the schools singing and playing music, a luau with a belly dancer, picnics, and trips to the 4-H pool in Front Royal, shopping in Charlottesville, a boat trip on the Annabel Lee in Richmond, and a Bluemont concert.
The Woodville Baptist Church hosts the group for a Thanksgiving dinner every year, and church member Bemie Price entertains them with organ music. At Easter time, children usually visit from CCLC to color eggs with the seniors. In the spring, the RCHS choir, which fills up a school bus, piles into the parish hall at Trinity to sing for them.
Mrs. Kiger said that the nutrition site is a lot of fun for those who attend, and those that do just love it. They meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, except for holidays.
