Mr. McCarthy reported rapid progress is being made on the new landfill cell. At the evening meeting the supervisors approved setting up an “enterprise fluid” to pay off the Virginia Resources Authority bonds issued to pay for the new cell and scales at the landfill. The enterprise fund will charge the county’s general fund a $43 per ton tipping fee.

The supervisors debated charging a similar fee to commercial haulers but made no decision. Mr. McCarthy said they could consider that as they get closer to the June 1 date the cell is supposed to be open.

The supervisors agreed to join Surry County in asking the Virginia Association of Counties to push for a bill in the General Assembly that would make all telephone, calls within a county toll-free.

They approved a special exception for a boundary adjustment between David and John Pullen.

They agreed to waive building fees and the county’s share of Health Department fees for the house to be built by Habitat for Humanity.
