Col. E.P. “Pete” Luke said he was unhappy about a small brochure put out by the county on ridgetop development. He said voters want to get the government off their backs, and this was full of things people would resent. He said discouraging driveways with greater than 12 percent slopes is not realistic since some people don’t have right of ways wide enough to put in a driveway with a less steep slope.
Mr. McCarthy said the brochure was made up of suggestions, questions for those who have recently purchased property in conservation zones to consider before building on their lots. These are not regulations, he said. The Planning Commission and his office have received complaints from long-term residents about houses that spoil the view and complaints from newcomers that their driveways have that washed away in heavy rains, he said.
