Driving around Irkutsk, we saw many remnants of the old wooden houses sinking into the ground because they were not built on foundations. There is appreciation of the antique buildings and efforts are made to preserve some of them. The city was founded in 1676 where the Angara and the Irkut rivers join, the Angara being the only river that drains Lake Baikal, 45 miles away to the east. Irkutsk is well located as a Siberian trading center for north/south, east/west transport. To developing Russia in importance, one might compare Irkutsk to Chicago in our country.

We visited an old church which recently had been refurbished. A large chapel was crowded because some children were being Christened. An old lady eagerly pointed out to me a picture of their first bishop. The ceilings and walls were decorated with illustrations of Biblical stories.
