Prune Canes
After the second crop is produced, the cane dies and should be removed. The crown of the plant, however, lives for eight or more years and continues to produce new canes each year. This means that after you have completed the June harvest and removed all canes, there still will be many new ones that will produce a fall crop.
For those people who find this system confusing, there is another way of pruning that has proven quite successful with fall-bearing raspberries such as the variety, Heritage. It eliminates the need to decide if a cane has completed both crops should be removed. In this system, Heritage is grown as a fall bearer only and never allowed to set the second crop in the summer.
