Goodbye to Dr. Chappell

We are sorry fco see Dr. Robert Chappell departing from our school system. He has been a steadying force for 12 and a half years.

Many have forgotten the circumstances that brought Dr. Chappell to Rappahannock. He was hired by a controversial School Board to replace a principal demoted against the wishes of the apparent majority of students, parents and teachers.

This was a very awkward position for a new principal to find himself in, and Dr. Chappell handled it very well. The school recovered quickly from these destabilizing events and improved under his leadership.

He has been a very able assistant to Superintendent David Gangel, taking on major responsibilities for the entire school system.

Most people who have come in contact with him have found him approachable and congenial.

We wish him well in his future position as Superintendent of the Essex County Public Schools.
