napkins, is also stored down two flights of stairs. If the site also had their own kitchen, meals could be prepared on site and not have to be delivered.
“It is so rural here that there is definitely a need for socialization,” said Mrs. Kiger. Many of the seniors have been coming to the site, which meets three times a week, for many years. They come and visit with their good friends, which they might otherwise not be able to see so often because of transportation problems.
Besides having lunch together three times a week, the group travels whenever possible, to the county park for a picnic, to another nutrition site for lunch (they go to the Culpeper site once a month), or on a grocery shopping or Christmas shopping trip. Mrs. Kiger said that this Christmas season, the group will be going to the White House to see the decorations, and may get to see the Nutcracker.
The seniors are required to pay for their own trips, and do so with their own funds raised from bake sales, quilt raffles, or other crafts and contributions from the community. Last year the Lions Club donated about $400 to the seniors.
