and as people left the country during the troubled ’teens and ’twenties of this century many took with them instruments, forming orchestras in America and other countries wherever there was a concentration of Russian immigrants. Many of the original orchestras in the United States have dissolved over the years, but others such as the sixyear-old Washington Balalaika Society have risen to take their place. Most of the instruments played by the WBS Orchestra were made in Russia, and the repertoire is drawn from the best of Andreyev and his worthy successors both in Russia and America. The costumes worn by orchestra members were developed after painstaking research into authentic Russian traditional costuming.
