very nourishing after the Fourth of July so calves must grow on milk. He said his cattle get little or no grain, but once an animal goes into the feeder market it’s got to be able “to convert high-energy crops efficiently.”

Stephen White, a large animal veterinarian who has recently started practicing in the county, talked about various organisms that can cause diarrhea in newborn calves. Several can be prevented by vaccinating the cow one month before she calves, he said. The calves need the immunity they get from drinking colustrum, and if they do not nurse right away after birth they should be bottle fed or force fed colustrum, he said.

Jack Dunford talked about various feeding formulas and the amount of weight gain a feeder can expect for the cost. He said, “poultry litter is the main commodity cattle producers are using.”

Randall Updike said that feeders lost money in the last year and now breeders are feeling the effects of that. The market has dropped dramatically, but is up slightly in the past week, he said.

Feeders will discount cattle for many reasons, he said. Black cattle are preferred. Too large and too small cattle are discounted as are heifers.
