began sewing the nine patches by hand, but soon decided that he would rather learn to use the sewing machine and finish the others by machine.
His mother said he enjoyed putting the different color squares together, planning the rhythm of color and pattern of the quilt. Sometimes, though, she said that the project was frustrating for him, and she helped him sew some of the long seams. She also nagged him to finish the project when he got discouraged.
Sam and his mom pieced the back of the quilt together, and used an old blanket for stuffing. Sam them finished off the quilt by tying knots, using blue cotton floss, at each comer of eveiy large square, to keep the blanket inside in place.
Though Sam is obviously glad that the quiltmaking is over, he is also obviously proud of the fine quilt which he produced. It is heartening to see a traditional craft carried on.
The quilt will be on display at the library through Nov. 20, which is the last day of National Children’s Book Week.
