Ten years ago we created the Ranee Lee Spellman Memorial.Award to honor our slain farm foreman.
We felt an obligation to honor a richly-talented man who had worked tirelessly and joyfully at farming and protecting the land and its wildlife. We felt a deep need to remember every year a man who had spent two years risking his young life for us in Vietnam but who was cruelly silenced at age 36 right here in his own country. . ■ .v
So, each year a small committee gathers at Lord Fairfax Community College to interview young applicants for the Spellman Award and to choose one or two to continue Ranee's work.
The $10,000 gift was Lord Fairfax Community College's first endowment. For eight years it was the College's sole agricultural scholarship. It set in motion a succession of development achievements by the College's Education Foundation. We take pride in having helped a dozen budding farmers and horticulturists to achieve their dreams -- and providing this major milestone in Lord Fairfax Community College's 25-year history, being celebrated this year.
