Students enrolled in IB participate in an extensive essay program and service/action projects. Teachers are trained internationally. Students must write comprehensive essays which are graded by both their county teachers and regional level evaluators to calibrate grades. A sampling of the essays are sent on to national, then international levels for evaluation, providing students with a look at how well their performance compares to other students’ around the world. According to Gangel, most colleges look very favorably at IB students who apply.
In addition to providing a great deal of rigor and challenge to the county’s participants, the IB is expensive. There are application fees, annual fees, and student per capita fees in addition to travel costs. Gangel estimates that participation requires at least $20,000 in start up funds, with annual costs and a salary stipend for a program coordinator tacked on. The FY98-99 budget includes training funds for teachers and staff to attend an IB conference next year. Dr. Tole will also represent the school board in a conference at England’s Oxford University, in part to discuss the IB program.
