Whether winning by chance or systematic, thoughtful, sophisticated riding, hunter pace riders must possess an accurate mental time clock. To duplicate the preset optimum times needed for victory in any of the 10 huntsponsored events this spring, a combination of luck and kkill are required.
Pairs of horses and riders attempt to second-guess an anonymous member of the sponsoring hunt who predetermines the winning time over courses which range from two to three miles. Hunter paces are cross country events hosted by most Virginia hunt clubs as fiind-raisers, and each is contested over a part of the host hunt’s territory.
The optimum time is usually set at a hand-gallop, though creek-crossings and rough terrain can fool competing riders into slowing down in places that perhaps the “pacesetter* did not slack stride. It is a combination of knowing the typical hunting pace of a
