for he is rufous-red, the color of a Red Fox, all over with the strongest color on the tail. Since the Fox Sparrow is much larger than other sparrows they are about seven and a half inches long they can really make the ground debris fly. Fox Sparrows turned up under our feeder after the great blizzard of January 1996. I haven’t seen one since.
Chickens scratch by raking one foot over the ground, then the other, in the alternate scratch method. After this, the scratcher peers down to see what goodies have been uncovered. Wild gallinaceous birds — the word means chickenlike — such as Wild Turkeys and quail (Bobwhites) search for hidden food in this way. When their chicks are about, the female alternates by using one foot, then the other, to search for food while the little ones watch. After a couple of scratchings, the adult stands back and the young ones rush forward to quickly consume what has been uncovered.
When the ground is covered by snow, the double scratch is most effective in uncovering seed. This is when white-throated Sparrows make the most use of their double scratching. Not only does the scratcher benefit, but other birds profit by the effort.
