It is likely that the many White-throated Sparrows at and around our feeder (we sometimes have as many as eight at one time) uncover enough hidden seed to satisfy these other finches. Certainly the Carolina Wren takes advantage of a white-throat’s efforts. I would be interested in hearing from readers whether or not they have seen the little snowbird, the Junco, doing the fancy two-jump step.
Bird seed providers lucky enough to have a towhee at the feeder can watch a major double scratcher because this fine bird — about the size of a Cardinal — can truly make the dead leaves fly. On several occasions I have been in the woods when I heard what sounded like a big bird or mammal searching through dry leaves. On investigation, I discovered a towhee sending leaves in all directions in its search for food.
The bold and handsome Fox Sparrow is also a double scratcher of considerable ability. This sparrow is well named
