Herd survey data
Milton Herd submitted his statistical summary of the citizen survey. According to the published report, 95 of 160 surveys were returned. “The 59 percent response rate was truly extraordinary,” wrote Herd. Also noteworthy is the ensured anonymity of participants. “No results were kept to match the individual survey number with names or addresses.”
The top four “most valued features of the town” received 86-98 percent support. Maintaining a clean, natural environment, a low crime rate, the small town atmosphere, and rural setting headed the list. The town’s “most serious * challenges” — deciding how to best preserve the town, failing septic systems or wastewater problems, proposed town boundary expansion, and potential growth caused by adding a public sewer system — all garnered roughly 50 percent support. More than one answer to the question was possible in the survey.
The “most desirable actions to pursue” ranged from building a small sewage treatment plant limited to solving town wastewater problems (44 percent said “very desirable”) to drawing up plans for orderly growth and preventing sprawl (79 percent said “very desirable”).
