will pay to the owner of the first horse other than Lonesome Glory to finish. It can be used by the “winning” owner for airfare to see the champ at Cheltenham or donated to a favorite charity. Two airline tickets to Cheltenham are being donated by the Sport of Kings. An after-race send-off party will be held at the summer house at Great Meadow. Admission to the race is free.
World timber crown up for grabs
Virginia-owned and -bred Saluter did it last year; as many as three U.S. timber toppers may cross the pond to vie for the World Timber Champion crown in 1998. The horse which wins the May 2 Virginia Gold Cup and May 24 Marlborough Cup in England will wear the mantle, and receive $100,000 to boot.
Saluter captured his fourth straight Gold Cup last May, then shipped to England to trounce the Brits on their home turf in England’s only timber ‘chase. Trainer-rider Jack Fisher of Maryland is reported to be preparing the gelding for a fifth Gold Cup attempt, so another Marlborough Cup try is not out of the picture for them.
