Report cards
Gangel briefly described the new Virginia School Report Cards that will be used to document school system performance. Not to be confused with report cards given by teachers to students, these cards summarize school-wide testing results, advanced academic programs, school accreditation, standards of learning achievement, levels of physical safety and other aspects of system operations. Copies of the new form are available in the school board office.
Communications
and ADPE
Biggs reported that county residents Steven Miller and Kay Johnson donated personal computers and other ADP equipment to the school system. The board unanimously approved acceptance of the donations with thanks.
Wingfield presented a plan by Sperryville Exxon to offer its customers the opportunity to receive cards toward gasoline purchases. For each card completed and redeemed, Sperryville Exxon will dqnate two dollars to the school system to use anywhere the money is needed. Wingfield added that the owners of Sperryville Exxon “wanted the money to go where it would do most good — that is, to the children of the county.”
Gangel suggested that the county would need to find an appropriate avenue to receive the funds as a donation. Biggs is the school board’s point of contact for all donations.
New business
Under new business, Makela briefly summarized political developments affecting county schools, such as charter school requests, employee contracts, and efforts to have the school board’s salary cap raised. Tole suggested that the board pursue the issue after concluding this year’s budget cycle.
