PONDERING OUR
EXISTENCE It is not often that people ponder their existence, but those who are witness to either birth or death may well wonder at our relation to the universe. Is the universe, to the extent that we are able to perceive it, really only the size of a pinhead in some other reality beyond our knowledge? What is our role? These questions and others were the subject of Olive Schreiner musings when she wrote, "This thing that we call existence; is it not something which has its roots far down below in the dark, and its branches stretching out in the immensity above, which we among the branches cannot see? Not a chance jumble, a living thing, a One. The thought gives us intense satisfaction, we cannot tell why." Sometimes at a time of loss, especially a loss that seems unfathomable or unjust, we need to fall into the arms of the unknown and let mystery surround us with its comfort.
