Hans-Joachim Mattke of Stuggart, Germany spoke at Ki Theater in Washington, Va. on Wednesday, Feb. 11. The theme of his talk was “The Challenge of Education in our Time.” Mattke has taught for 28 years, helped in founding two American high schools, and has consulted with schools around the world. He is trained in the Waldorf method, which was founded by Rudolf Steiner in 1916.

The goal of Waldorf education is to train a balance between the head, the heart and the hand. Steiner was propelled by the horror of World War I to find an education system that would prevent such heartless suffering in the future. The Waldorf School was closed by the Nazi’s in 1938. It was the first school that the Allies allowed to function after the defeat of Germany in World War II, because it was based in humanitarian principles. Currently, a Waldorf school is the only remaining educational facility on the Gaza strip, a Waldorf School serves homeless children in the favelas of Brazil and Rumania has decided to make this interdisciplinary, art-based curriculumn its national standard.
